NIP INFECTIONS IN THE BUD

Each new season brings with it a variety of changes. Spring has a wonderful kaleidoscope of colour with pollen in every flower, and frantic activity with bees and other insects competing for pollen that forms part of their food chain. For allergy sufferers, the excessive pollen in the air is not good news. This also seems to be a time of renewed activity for various bacteria and viruses as sudden temperate changes result in colds and flu – as well as cases of measles, mumps and other contagious and infectious diseases.

The good news is that the human body has the potential to defend itself against any onslaught provided the correct nutrients are supplied. If an infection gets a foothold, defences can be increased by generous amounts of various nutrients as soon as the first symptoms appear.

MEDICINE OR NUTRITION

Medicine is the study of disease while nutrition is the study of health. Study after study shows that there is no such thing as a safe drug or a safe vaccine, yet the first reaction to colds and flu is to reach for the medicine bottle. Vaccines have been developed to prevent childhood diseases such as measles, german measles (rubella) and mumps (MMR vaccine), but these diseases still occur, very often in those who have received the vaccine and in all age groups. Many studies show side effects of these vaccines to be more serious than the diseases themselves. Evidence also shows that preventing children from getting ordinary childhood diseases prevents their immune system from developing adequately.

MEASLES, GERMAN MEASLES AND MUMPS are all contagious viral diseases that do not respond to antibiotics. They are not life-threatening for a well and healthy child but can be more serious in teenagers and adults. Nutrition could ensure quick recovery in a matter of days and without any of the complications that can occur if symptoms are not treated correctly.

Building a strong healthy body requires living (raw) food to ensure optimum supply of phytonutrients and vitamins and minerals – fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds that still have enzymes in them. Sadly most “fresh” fruit and vegetables are only found in stores many days, weeks and sometimes months, after they have been harvested by which time most of the vitamins and minerals have been lost. The modern lifestyle diet of refined, processed and synthetic foods high in sugar, bad fats, additives and preservatives will not provide the correct nutrients without whole food supplements derived from the natural human food chain.

For optimum functioning of the immune system the correct protein, all 22 amino acids, must be available every day. A lack of protein can prevent recovery from infections regardless of amounts of vitamins obtained. Equally important is the correct balance of vitamins and minerals, but when the body is under siege by these viruses generous amounts of some nutrients are required.

Many research projects have shown Vitamin C to be deadly to all types of viruses and bacteria and the amount taken varies with the seriousness of the illness – it is better to take too much than too little. A sustained release Vitamin C will ensure a constant supply of the vitamin throughout the day and night. Dosage can be increased to 5 grams a day or to bowel tolerance level. Extra calcium and magnesium will assist with tissue repair and sore muscles while optimising the benefits of Vitamin C.

Blood Vitamin A drops sharply during infections and may disappear completely during measles and high fever which may leave the body susceptible to more serious infection such as encephalitis. Vitamin A is important for clearing infections of the skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Children should not take more than 15,000 iu a day while adults can take up to 50,000 iu a day while the infection lasts.

Vitamin E, containing tocopherols and tocotrienols, is a powerful antioxidant that prevents the oxidation of Vitamin A and helps to prevent the formation of scar tissue. Children must limit their intake to 200 iu per day and adults to 800 iu per day.

Children that have had measles, german measles or mumps will have life immunity and are likely to have a stronger immune system.

Vibrant health achieved by changing diet and supplementing dietary gaps is preferable to continual infection treated with medicine.

INVEST IN THE GOOD HEALTH OF YOUR CHILDREN BY PROVIDING THEM WITH A NUTRITIONAL FOUNDATION TO LAST A LIFETIME.
